Altough Melbourne is not considered a typical Australia beachy lifestyle city, you would be surprised by so many different and interesting things to do there, especially if you are the sophisticated urban type of person. I'm really fond of the city, but I don't know if my opinion counts because I lived there for almost six months, and I've made lots of friends. I lived in Melbourne from March to August 2009, which can be considered quite some time, but the sad part is that I only stayed there during autumn and winter. As a result, I couldn't see any of the summer attractions, usually held in its so many amazing parks and squares. On the other hand, I could enjoy its many well-known and highly recommended cafes and restaurants. If you need guidance, I highly suggest checking this blog on restaurants, pubs and cafes before deciding where to eat in Melbourne (http://melbournedinning.blogspot.com ).
To be regarded as the cultural and sporting capital of Australia is an absolute truth! In regards to sports, you can find pretty much everything in Melbourne: from rugby and cricket to Australian rules football and soccer. Many major events are held in the Victoria State capital, such as the Australian Open – tennis (in January), the Australian Grand Prix – Formula One (in March) and the Melbourne Cup – horse racing (on the first Tuesday of November), and it was the first southern hemisphere city to be host of the Olympic Games in 1956.
